The Italian BIOTEAM partner, Foundation for the Environment, and the Chamber of Commerce of Turin organize the workshop: "Forestry-wood sector: what key to a sustainable development?".

The event, realized in partnership with the Polytechnic of Turin and Cluster Legno Piemonte, will be held in Turin during the morning of 28th January 2015.

Workshop rationale and goals

For many years, the forestry-wood sector in Italy has been suffering weaknesses and imbalanced development. Unprofitable and poorly equipped forestry activities, mainly limited to self-consumption and underground economy, are often replaced by imports of raw and semi-finished products from abroad. Industrial activities involved in second-stage wood processing into final products for building and furnishings are, on the other hand, an excellence in global markets.
The economic crisis and the most recent global policies on resource management, especially energy, have added new elements of inconsistency to the strategic framework in which key players of the pathway have to operate. Conflicts and necessities are in particular today related to the choice between the use of raw material, which is becoming increasingly scarce, for the production of energy or for manufacturing.
The European Union gives programmatic recommendation about the priority of subsequent uses (the so-called cascading) that allows to exploit all different potentials of wood resources and to obtain the overall economic and environmental benefits that this approach may bring. To what extent is this applicable to the Italian context?
The event will analyze these premises with the help of representative stakeholders of the productive sector at national level. The round table "Recommendation for a sustainable development, market dynamics and policies capable of innovating development scenarios of solid pathways" will focus on possible implications in terms of opportunities and strategies with the involvement of local actors.
