Who we are

BIOTEAM is carried out by a European consortium coordinated by the JI Network (JIN) in the Netherlands and composed by non-profit organizations, governmental research institutes and universities in the framework of the Intelligent Energy - Europe (IEE) Programme

Eise Spijker (NL) - Project coordinator

Joint Implementation Network (JIN)

 

He's an expert on biomass-to-energy, waste-to-energy and other renewable energy related GHG life cycle assessments, JI-CDM projects and voluntary GHG initiatives. Climate finance policy and options expert, for public bodies and bio-energy market stakeholders.

Energy and waste policy instrument and evaluation expert, specialised in market-based mechanisms, incl. cap-and-trade, sustainable energy certification and project-based CO2-crediting schemes.

Wytze

Wytze van der Gaast (NL)

Joint Implementation Network (JIN)

 

He's a senior advisor on GHG accounting issues, technology transfer, and pathways for climate and development. During 2006-2007, he coordinated the project ‘Promoting Sustainable Energy Technology Transfers through the CDM: Converting from a Theoretical Concept to Practical Action’ (ENTTRANS) under the EU Sixth Framework Programme.

He is presently Quality Manager and research participant of the project ‘Assessment of Policy Impacts on Sustainability in Europe’ (APRAISE) under the EU Seventh Framework Programme.

In both ENTTRANS and APRAISE, he worked on exploring enabling environments for low emission technology development and transfer (incl. renewable and biomass-based energy technologies).

Krisztina

Krisztina Szendrei (NL)

Joint Implementation Network (JIN)

 

Krisztina Szendrei, Ph.D, joined JIN in 2013 and has been working on projects related to energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate change.

She has been involved in several EU-funded projects such as Apraise, BIOTEAM and TRANSrisk. She is currently working in the field of bioenergy and climate change (considering possible trajectories towards a low-emission future, including assessment of technology options, costs and benefits, as well as risks and uncertainties within the TRANSrisk project).

Kaija

Kaija Hakala (FI)

MTT Agrifood Research Finland (MTT)

 

PhD Kaija Hakala is a principal research scientist at MTT. She is an expert in crop physiology, the effects of climate change on crop production, organic farming and mitigation of climate change with means of bioenergy production. She is a Review Editor of IPCC fifth assessment report WG 2 Chapter 7 (Food production systems and food security). In BIOTEAM project Kaija evaluates the production, volumes and potential of agricultural biomasses for bioenergy.

Vesa Joutsjoki (FI)

MTT Agrifood Research Finland (MTT)

 

PhD Vesa Joutsjoki is a principal research scientist at MTT Agrifood Research Finland. He is an expert in molecular biology, molecular genetics and gene technology, and is especially interested in usage (for energy and other purposes),  microbiological quality and storage of all kinds of biomasses, especially waste. One big field of interest is refinery of waste materials into valuable products. In BIOTEAM project Vesa takes care of evaluation of waste biomasses volume and usage possibilities for bioenergy and other products.

Taija Sinkko (FI)

MTT Agrifood Research Finland (MTT)

 

MSc (in engineering) Taija Sinkko is a research scientist at MTT. She is an expert in life cycle assessment (LCA) of agricultural production of food and biomasses for bioenergy. In BIOTEAM project Taija takes care of LCA analysis of different bioenergy pathways.

Suvi Kuittinen (FI)

University of Eastern Finland (UEF)

 

MSc Suvi Kuittinen is a project researcher at University of Eastern Finland, School of Forest Sciences. Her main research interests are biomass properties and biochemical conversion for biorefining and bioenergy. In BIOTEAM project Suvi works on evaluation on the potential and bioeconomy of forest biomasses for bioenergy.

Ari Pappinen (FI)

University of Eastern Finland (UEF)

 

Dr. Ari Pappinen is a full time professor at the University of Eastern Finland, School of Forest Sciences.  His recent activities have been on developing of a new Wood Materials Science research and education programme at UEF. His main research interests are with the topics on exploitation of natural resources based on bio-economy with the means of green technology.  In Bioteam project Ari studies different aspects of sustainability in the Finnish renewable energy circumstances.

Aki Villa (FI)

University of Eastern Finland (UEF)

 

Dr. Aki Villa is a project researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, School of Forest Sciences. His main interests are production of woody biomass for different energy solutions, production of woody biomass with short rotations (rotation from 3-10 years) using especially Salix species and different environmental services (energy production, waste water purification, phytoremediation) based on wood plantations. In BIOTEAM project Aki studies different aspects of sustainability in the Finnish renewable energy circumstances.

Žydrė Kadžiulienė (LT)

Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LRCAF)

 

She is head researcher on perennial grasses for energy purposes, biopotential of novel energy crops and their biomass use, biopotential of grasslands for multifuctional use, etc.

Since 2012 she is coordinator of long-term LRCAF programme “Biopotential and quality of plants for multifunctional use”. During 2008-2012 participated in national project “Biomass for Biogas” and international INTERREG project “Bioenergy Promotion”.

Diana Mizaraite (LT)

Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LRCAF)

 

She is an expert on economic and social aspects of forest biofuel and wood biomass production. She participated in FP6 project WOODENMAN, SNS project "A simple forest bioenergy decision support tool for estextension in the Nordic and Baltic countries" and several other international projects concerning forest biofuel production and policy development.

Vita Tilvikiene (LT)

Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LRCAF)

 

She is junior researcher at Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry; her reasearch topics are the optimisation of growing technologies of perennial energy grasses and the evaluation of biomass quality and energy potential.

Alice Montalto (IT)

Fondazione per l'Ambiente (FA)

 

Graduated in Environmental Engineering, she worked in an engineering society where she was in charge of designing renewable energy power plants. She has been collaborating with Fondazione per l'Ambiente since 2012, working on projects related to environmental sustainability and renewable energy, with particular focus on biomass and biogas.

Daniele Russolillo (IT)

Fondazione per l'Ambiente (FA)

 

Expert in market instruments for environment and energy polices and in integrated cost-benefit analysis of energy systems. He has experience in project management and in the development and management of web-based/cloud collaboration tools. Since 2004 he has been collaborating with Fondazione per l’Ambiente, where he has been appointed as Programme Manager and works both in the research stream “Energy and Environment” and "Local Public service Economic Regulation".

Andrzej Szajner (PL)

Baltic Energy Conservation Agency (BAPE)

 

Vice-president of BAPE. He is an expert on biomass-to-energy, waste-to-energy and other renewable energy projects, from feasibility studies to implementation. He has been manager of numerous national EE and RES projects, participation in number of international projects, including IEE projects.

Business Development Manager at BAPE. She is an expert in environmental procedures for projects and sustainable development issues. She took part in international projects (including IEE) related to sustainable energy (RES, EE, planning).

 Lars-Peter Lauven (DE)

 Georg-August-University of Göttingen (UGOE)

 

He graduated at the School of Economics and Business Engineering, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2007. Following internships at BASF SE in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Geismar, LA, USA, he joined Prof. Dr. Jutta Geldermann’s chair of Production and Logistics at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 2008. Since early 2011, he is also working as a project developer for energy economics at the efzn (energy research center of Niedersachsen). He finished his doctoral thesis “Optimization of Biomass-to-Liquids Plant Setups and Capacity Using Nonlinear Programming” in October of 2011.

Tim Shroeder (DE)

Georg-August-University of Göttingen (UGOE)

 

He's graduated in Management with a strong focus on Operations Research and Resource Efficiency which resulted in a master’s thesis investigating the profitability of different pathways for renewable natural gas production.

In spring 2013, he has started as a research assistant at the chair of Production and Logistics at Georg-August-University of Göttingen where he is doing research in the field of bio refineries. Furthermore he is working on projects concerning the efficient use of bioenergy and Life Cycle Assessments.
